What We Build and How We Build It
Schrapper's Fine Cabinetry & Design has been building custom cabinetry from our Jupiter, FL workshop since 1983. Over 42 years and more than 10,000 completed projects, our focus hasn't changed: build cabinet boxes from furniture-grade hardwood plywood with solid hardwood face frames, hang them on soft-close hinges, fit them with full-extension drawer slides, and finish everything by hand. That's the standard on every project we take — not an upgrade package, not a premium tier. We've found that the difference between cabinetry that holds up for 30 years in a South Florida kitchen and cabinetry that starts showing its age in five comes down to the box construction and the materials behind the doors. Particleboard swells. MDF sags. Furniture-grade plywood with hardwood edge-banding doesn't. It's a more expensive way to build, but it's the only way we've ever built.
Our shop handles everything from full custom kitchen cabinetry — islands, pantry towers, appliance garages, the works — to bathroom vanities, closet systems, outdoor kitchen cabinetry, wall units, home offices, and built-in entertainment centers. We also take on laundry rooms, mudrooms, butler's pantries, and the kind of odd-shaped nooks that no stock cabinet will ever fit properly. If it involves wood, joinery, and a client who cares about the details, it's probably something we've built before.
Why Materials and Construction Methods Actually Matter
We get a lot of questions about what separates custom cabinetry from the semi-custom and stock options available through big-box retailers. The honest answer is construction method, material quality, and fit. Our cabinet boxes are built from plywood rated to Architectural Woodwork Institute standards, with hardwood face frames that are mortise-and-tenon joined — not stapled, not pocket-screwed. Doors and drawer fronts are built from solid North American hardwoods: maple, cherry, white oak, walnut, and alder are the species we work with most often, though we source specialty woods for clients who want something specific. Every hinge is a soft-close European-style concealed hinge (we use Blum and Grass hardware as standard), and every drawer rides on full-extension undermount slides rated for 75 to 100 pounds.
Where it gets more nuanced is the finish. We do both stain-and-lacquer finishes and painted finishes in-house. Painted cabinets — white, off-white, grays, blues, greens — have been the dominant request in our area for the last several years, particularly in coastal and transitional style kitchens. They look beautiful, but we tell every client the same thing: painted finishes will show hairline cracks at joint lines over time, especially in South Florida where wood expands and contracts with humidity swings. It's not a defect — it's wood doing what wood does. If that kind of thing would bother you, a stained finish on a tighter-grained species like maple or alder is going to be a better fit. We'd rather have that conversation on the front end than have a client surprised two years in.
For outdoor kitchen projects, we shift to marine-grade plywood and stainless steel hardware exclusively. Standard interior-grade materials won't survive the salt air and afternoon rain cycles that are just part of living in South Florida. We've seen competitors' outdoor work delaminate within 18 months because they used interior plywood with a waterproof finish on top — the finish fails eventually, and then the substrate is exposed. Marine-grade all the way through is the only approach we trust for exterior applications here.
Who We Work With
Most of our clients fall into one of three situations. First, homeowners doing a full kitchen or bath renovation — they've lived with builder-grade cabinets for years and are ready for something that fits their space and how they actually live. Second, new construction clients working with a builder or architect who want cabinetry that goes beyond what the builder's standard allowance covers. Third, homeowners who need one specific thing — a home office built-in, a master closet system, a laundry room reworked — and want it done right the first time rather than cobbled together from stock components.
We serve homes throughout Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Tequesta, Juno Beach, Hobe Sound, Palm City, Stuart, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Delray Beach. All work is built in our Jupiter shop and installed by our team. The typical project starts around $30,000 for a kitchen and scales from there depending on size, wood species, door style complexity, and hardware choices. We're always straightforward about pricing — after your design consultation, you'll get a detailed written estimate that breaks down every line item.
