What to Expect when Designing a Kitchen (Part 1)

December 17, 2014

The process of remodeling a kitchen begins when the kitchen no longer provides adequate functionality and the homeowners reach the point that they are no longer happy in their present kitchen situation. In other words, they’ve either outgrown their kitchen because of new additions to their family, or, due to functional obsolescence; meaning the appliances, lighting, layout and space requirements are past their prime.

Initially the first two steps involve the following:

  1.    Research kitchen styles and choose the one that gets you excited!
  2.    Conduct your own personal research – your family’s needs and lifestyle

These first two steps can take a fair amount of time. Researching kitchen design, specifically fine cabinetry, may take some time when you consider the vast selection of conventional, as well as, crossover styles (combining two or more known styles such as country with traditional kitchen design).

Your personal research takes into consideration numerous factors that will provide you with greater comfort and satisfaction once the project is completed.

How Much Does It Cost?

The third step often stumps homeowners as they try to figure out a realistic budget. Kitchen projects can run the gamut. Whether accomplished on a beer budget with no frills, or on a larger champagne budget, where every detail and element are a part of the plan, you need to know what you can afford to spend prior to committing to all of your contractors and vendors. A good rule of thumb is to include a ten to fifteen percent cushion for errors and omissions. The unexpected can and does happen – sometimes from out of nowhere and particularly when conducting the project on your own or when using a company young in experience and professional know how. Schrapper’s 30 plus years, in kitchen design and renovations, alleviates these types of situations and keeps everyone on track, respecting your budget and time frame. A well thought out plan is essential when handling a project of this size.
