Living Your Dream

An in-ground pool is the impetus to set up a palatable niche that’s inviting and multi-purpose, regardless if it’s used year round or for just a few short summer months. The trickle-down effect of installing a pool is pretty awesome: it goes from being a place to cool off and exercise to a place of relaxation, reflection and entertaining family and friends.
Exercise might be high on the list of reasons to get a pool but, once it’s there and you decide to dine outdoors, the 100 step round trip may become a tad tiring. And that’s when you realize that a patio kitchen is not necessarily a luxury.

Patio Kitchens: The Home Away from Home

The five main components of an outdoor kitchen include:

  • A grill
  • Storage
  • Countertop
  • Refrigeration
  • Dining table and chairs

Once you decide that your pool area is to include a kitchen, map out where you want to place the essential components. Cabinetry needs to be installed correctly to the exterior wall to make sure that it can support the weight of the contents. After you’ve chosen the grill, refrigerator and countertop, the real fun begins as you shop for the table, chairs and accessories.

Remember to include an umbrella or consider installing an awning so that you can enjoy your patio kitchen when the sun is overhead. Keep in mind that the elements can do grave damage to furniture and fabrics. Choose the most “weather friendly” materials for years of enjoyment. As you begin to use your outdoor kitchen more often, consider the lighting, table settings and sound system as the backdrop to a complete dining experience.
